After last’s year plethora of events for the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, a more modest calendar follows this year for the 453rd anniversary of his birth.

Across the US

What’s Onstage? A roundup of theaters honoring Will with performances of his own plays along with plays of his contemporaries.


Head over to The Annual Shakespeare Sonnet Slam where 154 Sonnets will be read aloud in numerical order at Naumburg Bandshell in Central Park.

Spend Shakespeare’s Birthday with A Night of Villians featuring Iago and Lady Macbeth, and Shylock and Richard III. In Bryant Park, actors take on some of the Bard’s greatest monsters, political outcasts and social misfits.

Washington DC

Visit this annual event at The Folder Library. Performances, stage combat demos and Elizabethan crafts are on the agenda. And of course a birthday cake for Will!


Watch for the clues: the Ohio Shakespeare Festival is staging a free scavenger hunt. Find 10 presents hidden indoors around Akron. Each one relates to a title of one of the Bard’s plays.


Treat yourself to a spectacular Steampunk-themed Shakespeare celebration for all ages. The event kicks off with free admission to the Experience Theater Project’s public celebration of Shakespeare’s 453rd birthday.
