Leaf peepers, corn mazes and pumpkin patches… oh my

Spending an autumn weekend in New England is one of life’s true pleasures. The crisper air unmutes the summer sky to reveal its deeper blue tones. And, if Mother Nature has cooperated, the stunning and vibrant fall leaves change the landscape into a jewel-encrusted blanket.

Mother Nature was a bit stingy with the rain this year, but the gold, magenta, orange and deep green leaves found their way through in many areas of The Berkshires, I am happy to report.

As one of the many nerdy leaf peepers flooding New England, I was treated to the spectacular views from Mount Sugarloaf at sunset. With maybe one more week until peak color, it wasn’t one of the more robust fall color displays, but still enthralling to see from atop the mountain as the valley sprawls below and the clusters of colors shine.

Along with the color, Mike’s Maze is a favorite stopover. This year, the theme of the corn maze is “See America,” honoring the 100th anniversary of our National Park Service.

Winding our way through the maze, we were challenged by questions about John Muir and Teddy Roosevelt, glaciers and sand dunes, and some others that stumped us. We were treated to more questions about the wildlife that had, and still does, inhabit the parks. I’m proud to say that we did quite well and earned our mini-pumpkin prizes, later treating ourselves to homemade apple cider doughnuts for a job well done.

After spending a great weekend with good friends, good food (we had an exceptional meal at Blue Heron), and two of my favorite dogs, our last stop was a pumpkin patch.

The pumpkin harvest was abundant at a favorite farm stop along the route home. Muted and brilliant orange pumpkins of all shades, white pumpkins and green pumpkins sprouting exotic textures, and gourds galore finished off a fabulous fall getaway.
