A multi-storied stairwell

This is ‘New York’s Most Exciting Stairwell.’ That’s what reads on the door of stairwell B in the Museum of the City of New York. But it’s not thrilling because of the architecture.

On a recent trip to that museum to see the inspiring “Everything is Design: The Work of Paul Rand” (read about that experience here), I was pleasantly surprised to find a revamped gem of a place. So very different from my last visit there many, many years ago.

In addition to the Paul Rand collection, there was a wonderful exhibit, Saving Place, about lost and preserved NYC landmarks, and another, Activist New York, focused on the drama of social activism in NYC past and present.

But the beating heart of museum lies in stairwell B. If you use it to access the exhibits, you get the stories of the love-hate relationship that so many writers, painters, politicians, composers, and more – who have lived in, or passed through – have with our fair city. If you’ve got the stamina, it’s well worth navigating the museum this way.

Graphically created in stark black and white, with bold typographic quotes juxtaposed with historical images, there’s something to discover within the stairwell in every nook and cranny.

My stairwell B slideshow is a good sampling of the opinions of many New Yorkers. Enjoy.
