Surrender New York?

what’s happening in New York, Brooklyn Bridge, borough flags, security breach, landmark, has nyc surrendered

This morning New Yorkers awoke to find white flags atop the two towers on the Brooklyn Bridge instead of the two American flags that normally fly from the poles.

Has NYC surrendered to someone or something? Doubtful, but security on the bridge has sure become lax if perpetrators were able to swap out the flags unnoticed.

I worked on the Brooklyn Bridge 100 celebration and a similar thing happened. We had replaced the American flags with variations of the Manhattan and Brooklyn borough flags on each tower. Shortly after installation, those flags went missing. A plea went out for their return – and they were returned. But a few days later, they went missing again, forever. Hmmm. Same person or same family of thieves?

The only access to the tower tops (as I understood it) are by climbing the cables or by helicopter drop. Both obvious measures of mischief. I’m hoping the security cameras on the bridge caught the thieves in action and the mystery will be solved.

I, for one, don’t want anyone defacing our great landmark.
