Get bookish on World Book Night 2014

World Book Night US, book lovers, libraries NYPL, volunteerism, worldwide events, great causes, love of reading,

Wednesday, 23 april is World Book Night (WBN). This annual celebration invites everyone to rediscover the joy of reading for pleasure, and spreads the love of reading and books – person to person. This worldwide event is even more special this year because it occurs on the 450th anniversary of Shakespeare’s birth. Seems fitting.

Readers, book and library lovers, lend us your hands

Publishers print special editions of more than 30 books selected by an independent panel of booksellers and librarians, and 25,000 volunteer givers select books and distribute them to light readers and non-readers within their communities.

The New York Public Library is partnering with World Book Night US to celebrate the wonderful world of reading and libraries with its program on 22 april. Barnes & Noble stores will serve as community host locations.

The 2014 selections feature books appealing to many ages and interests, including books in Spanish and large print editions. Some 2014 US titles include (see the complete US list  / check out the UK + Ireland list):

World Book Night US, book lovers, libraries NYPL, volunteerism, worldwide events, great causes, love of reading, Wait Till Next Year: A Memoir by Doris Kearns Goodwin, Catch 22 by Joseph Heller, Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky, Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin, Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain, Hoot by Carl Hiasson, WBN2014 ebook

World Book Night US is adding free digital components (ebook, bookmark, postcard and flyer) this year to supplement its primary mission: Getting printed books to half a million adult and teenage light or non-readers. Volunteer givers are encouraged to share this free ebook with everyone along the way.

A joint effort of World Book Night and Livrada, the 2014 ebook is an original collection of ten short stories and essays by booksellers, librarians, and authors who are WBN participants. The WBN2014 ebook will be posted online for two weeks beginning 22 april 2014 at no charge. Download to any device with a web browser or download the PDF to print or read onscreen.

Read on. Get transported.

Which of the 30+ titles have you read, or will you add to your reading list?

    Hello The Curious G:

I just found out that the US has suspended World Book Night due to lack of funding. And then I stumbled on your post. FYI. I wish I had a million to help them out. It’s such a great program.

    Hi Tim:

Thanks for reading the curious g and for your comment. It is indeed sad that this great program can’t continue. Here’s hoping some great philanthropist notices and makes it happen again.
