Oscars 2014: Pleasant, predictable

Oscars 2014 – done deal – with more standing Os than warrented (kind of like NYC theater). No surprises at all as evidenced by my predictions and scorecard (22 of 24 correct, see below).

The big winners were 12 Years a Slave and Gravity while American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street and Nebraska were shut out.

As host, Ellen DeGeneres did a good job and kept things moving – gentle comedy with fun activities and random audience participation – rather than biting humor.

Oscars 2014 highlights:

  • Getting down: Lupita Nyong’o and Amy Adams grooving to Pharrell Williams’ Happy.
  • A star-studded selfie: Twitter went into overload when nearly 2 million Twitter users took up Ellen’s challenge to retweet an A-list selfie of all selfies. #twitterfail
  • The pizza delivery to feed the hungry and the bored: Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence chowed down with a slice on a paper plate. Don’t they feed the A-list?
  • Darlene Love’s thank you: Belting out her thanks for recognition, as 20 Feet from Stardom took home the gold for best documentary.
  • Alfonso Cuarón’s amusing language-mixup: Thanking the Warner Bros’ wise “guys” which he quickly corrected to wise “people.”
  • Best dressed: With a few exceptions, bright was not the fashion of the night with most starlets wearing black, navy or pale tones. Lupita Nyong’o, Cate Blanchett and Naomi Watts were among the winners.
  • Oscar Bingo discovered!

Oscars 2014 lowlights:

  • Endless, rambling acceptance speeches (Jared Leto and Robert Lopez were some exceptions): Next year, winners will add their pets to their thank you lists since every human will have already been mentioned.
  • Harrison Ford introducing three nominated films: Was he alive? Is he an actor?
  • Who did John Travolta introduce? It didn’t sound like Idina Menzel.
  • Still no statues: Amy Adams, Michael Fassbender, Sally Phillips. These actors consistently do great work – their time will come.

That’s it for another year. Let’s hope that the 2014 film offerings are as good, and as diverse as 2013.
