Equal parts day + night: Happy Autumnal Equinox 2013

It’s that time of the year when the white clothes get closeted to make way for the wools and warm hues of fall. For today is the autumnal equinox.

Here on the east coast in the northern hemisphere, the new season officially begins at 4:44 pm when the sun crosses directly over the Earth’s equator, and both day and night are just about equal.

The gorgeous harvest moon appeared on 18 september, in preparation for the equinox.

Watch how the equinox looks from space as you enjoy the crisp, clear days ahead.
