Star-trippin’

If it’s summer, there must be stars

Hit the road with TCM’s Summer Under the Stars. The series returns today with a medium-fresh group of 31 starry actors who get one full day of devotion. There are the usual heavy duty favorites: Brando kicks it off, Grant, MacLaine, Welles, Dietrich and Stewart etc.

TCM’s summer under the stars, for film lovers, classic films,

TCM has thrown some B-listers a bone: Linda Darnell, Howard Keel and Ralph Bellamy among others. They have even gone so far as to choose a few fairly obscure actors: Jean Gabin, Ann Dvorak and Conrad Veidt. The mention of their names elicited a “Who?” from a friend.

They also chose a few, more obscure films – but fear not – The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Now Voyager, Casablanca, Bringing Up Baby and a host of classics figure prominently. TCM is not interested in becoming IFC.

I, for one, am glad they are digging a bit deeper in their film archives, and not replaying the same same starring the same same. No matter how much you enjoy a film, how many times can you watch it before it loses all appeal?

Checkout the coast to coast star trip. There’s an actor and a film for everyone. Download TCM’s Summer Under the Stars full schedule or subscribe to the RSS feed.

I’m looking out for these 10 films:

  • The Freshman
  • Sidewalks of London
  • Sweet Smell of Success
  • The Devil is a Woman
  • Bell, Book and Candle
  • Bringing Up Baby (ok, my exception, it never gets old)
  • Le Jour se Leve
  • Lost Horizon
  • Best Foot Forward
  • West of Zanzibar

What films will you tune in for, or Tivo?
