Hot tickets for 2010: Places to go, people to see

A few weeks ago, the curious g posted Lonely Planet’s top 10 destinations to visit this year. The New York Times has now published its 31 places to visit. The must-visit common destinations are Nepal and Istanbul, Turkey. Countries including Brazil, India, Malaysia and Morocco are listed prominently, with each source citing different cities. The Baltic and Southern Africa regions are up there as well.

A few tidbits from the Times article: This may be the last year for tourism to the fragile continent of Antarctica due to heavy tourist influx in the last decade; Istanbul is touted as having one of the most innovative art scenes in the world; mostly Hindu Nepal is now gay friendly, with many bars dotting Kathmandu; Macedonia is becoming rich in treasures thanks to new government-financed archaeological digs; and Kuala Lumpur’s fashion industry goes global as fashion king, Bernard Chandran, outfits Lady Gaga for an awards event.
