The fashionistas of Pakistan
The phrase “Fashion Week” isn’t normally associated with Pakistan. But the country’s first fashion week was held in cosmopolitan Karachi over four days earlier in November. The organizers aimed to present a different face of the country and to boost an industry that employs hundreds of thousands of people.
With a mix of couture and ready-to-wear fashions, many designers’ collections referenced the turmoil coursing through the society. Some clothes drew on traditional Pakistani outfits and tribal motifs while others had little of traditional aesthetics.
In a culture where nearly all women dress modestly, many outfits were too racy for local wear. Designer Ayesha Tahir Masood said. “Only 0.001 percent of Pakistani women would wear these clothes, and then only in a controlled environment when drunk out of their minds.”
Talk about being a slave to fashion.
