A note and a nudge

By way of Letters of Note and a letter to Andy Warhol, I thought I’d provide a subtle reminder that the Get Ready for Your Close-up survey is open thru 31 october. Mosey on over and participate, or read more about it here.

CREATING THE ROLLING STONES 1971 ALBUM COVER, STICKY FINGERS,
WITH CONCEPT/PHOTOGRAPHY BY ANDY WARHOL AND DESIGN BY CRAIG BRAUN

The design lore goes like this

In 1969, Andy Warhol casually mentioned to Mick Jagger that it would be amusing to have a real zipper on an album cover. A year later Jagger proposed the idea for Sticky Fingers.

Andy Warhol took the cover shot. Though many people assumed that the model was Jagger, it’s been rumored to be Joe Dallesandro, a regular at Warhol’s Factory.

But no one thought ahead to the shipping logistics. By using a real zipper, the height pressed into the album stacked above it. Designer Braun came up with a solution – pull down the zipper before the album was shipped, then it would dent only the label.

This use of the Sticky Fingers cover image is solely to illustrate the audio recording in question. The image is hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation and qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law.

There should be more clients who say “just write and tell me how much money you want.” Also, what happened to the balloon inside the zipper when they were all shipped unzipped?

I guess if you’re Mick Jagger and Andy Warhol, it’s not about the money.

They’ve only printed the image after the initial run, so there’s no interactivity. I don’t remember a balloon, and I’ve googled it, but I’m not coming up with anything. Care to enlighten us?

I liked that the album was banned for the lewd imagery and alternate covers were designed, some extremely gory. Yet, all drug references didn’t seem to be a problem. Hmmm…
