Timbuktu or Bust

A few nights ago, I had the absolute pleasure of seeing a documentary at the Irish Arts Center called Dambé: The Mail Project. If the venue and the film seem a strange combo, here’s the connection. It’s a musical journey through modern day Africa with an acclaimed Irish duo of traveling players, Liam O’Maonlai and Paddy Keenan. The two teamed up in 2006 to travel to music events in Mali that culminated in a unique performance at the world’s most remote music festival “Festival au Desert.” Along the way they met up with legendary musicians such as Ali Farka Touré and Afel Bocoum, and the Tuareg band, Tinariwen. The documentary served as a wonderful travelogue from Bamako to Essakene (the actual festival site near Timbuktu) and an amazing look into the various Malian peoples and their music.

If you suffer from extreme wanderlust, as I do, this is a must see. I’m moving the Festival au
Desert up higher on my travel wish list.
